Why bother to get accredited?

EMDR basic training can be a whirlwind of theory and practice,

usually over an intense period. Many newly minted EMDR therapists are fired up to start using EMDR in their work. However, like driving, the true learning starts after you get your driving license. Newly trained EMDR therapists are confronted by the following challenges:

• Clients are presenting with more complexity, which brings with it challenges in case conceptualisation,

• There is a need for a dialogue between EMDR research and practice.

• “Therapist drift” (Waller 2009)  away from the evidence based model is a risk.

• Not every therapist is working in an EMDR aware or even friendly setting.

• It can be difficult to find properly accredited Consultants for supervision

I have seen how therapists gain confidence and competence when they receive good quality supervision and feel part of the EMDR community.

Working towards and achieving Accreditation as an EMDR Europe Practitioner:

• Builds skills in assessment, screening and case conceptualisation

• Contains anxieties raised by working with complexity and risk

• Provides a reflective space to review and understand one’s work

• Provides opportunity to apply research  to one’s

own practice

• Strengthens one’s knowledge and internalisation

of the EMDR model and mitigates against

“Therapist drift”

• Provides a supportive and knowledgeable “trauma-aware” peer group

• Opportunity to learn and be mentored by an experienced Consultant.

• Provides listed membership of the EMDR Association UK, and opportunities to get more involved in Special Interest Groups, Committees and Conferences.
